Valencia Club de Fútbol are in advanced negotiations to appoint Javier Aguirre as their new head coach. Talks with the 67-year-old Mexican manager have been conducted discreetly over several days and could be finalised after a key meeting scheduled for Friday.
The club, sitting 18th in LaLiga with just four points from six games, sees Aguirre's experience and character as vital to stabilising a difficult situation. The team has managed only one win in its last five matches, a victory over Alavés last week that halted a run of four consecutive defeats. For performance, the squad has conceded ten goals and scored only two so far this season, underlining the need for urgent change. Sporting director Braulio Vázquez has explored other options but now believes Aguirre is the leading candidate.
The Mexican coach possesses extensive knowledge of Spanish football, having managed six different clubs in the country, from Osasuna and Atlético Madrid to Espanyol and Mallorca. Aguirre has been without a team since concluding his tenure with the Mexico national team after the 2026 World Cup. "He faces with enthusiasm the possibility of returning to Spanish benches," Aguirre has said. He also "views the option of managing Valencia very positively".
Economic conditions are not seen as a major obstacle to a deal. Aguirre's aim would be to complete the current season and, depending on the achievement of objectives including survival, consider a possible contract extension. Valencia plan to use the three-week international break so that, once the signing is closed, Aguirre can arrive at Paterna and conduct a mini-pre-season with the squad. The club hopes this break and the new coach's work will provide the necessary boost to improve key statistics, such as minutes played without conceding and the ability to secure points in key matches.
In the meantime, the team prepares for its next league fixture against Real Sociedad at Mestalla this Sunday. Óscar Sánchez will sit on the bench as interim coach for that match. The squad needs an urgent boost that the club hopes Aguirre can provide.
