Valencia Club de Fútbol is navigating a critical season with a restrictive economic strategy, betting that the future opening of the New Mestalla will be key to its financial recovery. Football CEO Ron Gourlay outlined this vision in an extensive appearance reported by El País Deportes, as the team struggles near the bottom of La Liga. As of September 4, 2026, the Che side sits 16th with just one point from three games, having recorded zero wins, one draw, and two losses.
The sporting situation is tough. The team has scored only one goal and conceded four, leaving them with a negative three goal difference. This Saturday, September 6, they will host league leaders Barcelona at Mestalla, trailing them by eight points. You can check the full schedule on our fixtures page. The league start has been disappointing and the creation of clear chances has been minimal, barely half a dozen in total.
Why was transfer spending so low?
Summer market investment was just 9.4 million euros, a figure lower than thirteen other clubs in the competition. It was half of what Getafe spent and nearly one third of the outlay by recently promoted Deportivo. Gourlay, 64, with 35 years of experience in the football business, justified this austerity due to strict financial fair play rules. The club's current margin is around 80 million, a figure that could exceed 130 million with income from the New Mestalla. Owner Peter Lim, in charge for twelve years, is unwilling to inject more capital.
"When I was a child I also liked to get excited every summer with signings and that's why I understand the fans' frustration," admitted the Scottish executive. Despite the low spending, Gourlay defends the quality of the additions. "The decisions that have been made are the correct ones." he stated. The three reinforcements this summer are Justin de Haas, Aliou Dieng, and young Japanese forward Ryunosuke Sato, aged 19. They are joined by the continuity of Argentine midfielder Guido, 32, who arrived on loan last season.
How does the debt affect the sporting project?
The club's debt is around 380 million euros, a huge burden that conditions all decisions. Gourlay, who arrived thirteen months ago appointed by Lim, intends to complete three seasons before retiring. His goal is to replicate the stability and performance of the second half of last season, when Valencia was the third-highest points earner in La Liga with 32. That run left them just one point away from European qualification, a tournament they have missed for eight seasons.
Manager Carlos Corberán is considered untouchable in his position and the right person to lead this long-term project. The current squad, however, is far from the level of the legends who forged the club's history. Gourlay acknowledged that no current player matches the stature of icons like David Villa, Rubén Baraja, 'Piojo' López, Fabián Ayala, Mario Kempes, Puchades, or Mundo. The team's value is now half or one third of what it was a decade ago.
What is the role of the New Mestalla?
The immediate future of Valencia CF is tied to the completion of its new stadium. The New Mestalla was expected to be ready for this season. Its opening is seen as the solution to generate the necessary income to relieve financial pressure. Meanwhile, the old Mestalla, the oldest stadium in the top flight, is living its farewell season, filled with fans every matchday.
Gourlay has never considered resigning, though he is disappointed with the start of the campaign. In this appearance, he avoided talking about a return to Europe, unlike previous occasions. His plan is to maintain stability and wait for the new arena to change the game's rules. The next challenge is the clash against Barcelona, the league leaders, this Saturday, September 6.
